Safe first steps for an active roof leak

Define temporary roof protection

Define temporary roof protection with a photo-first condition record, defined scope, and documented handoff.

Understand the condition

A tarp, drain clearing, limited patch, or interior containment is a temporary control only when its location, purpose, limits, monitoring, and removal path are recorded.

Ask who will inspect the temporary work, what weather or access limits apply, and how the permanent-repair inspection will be scheduled and documented.

Define the repair decision

Write the temporary objective precisely: divert water from one opening, secure a displaced component, clear an accessible outlet, or protect an exposed area until inspection. Identify the covered location, installation date, expected monitoring, weather limits, and conditions that require the temporary measure to be revisited.

Temporary work needs an exit plan. Name who will inspect the underlying assembly, who can approve permanent work, and whether removal is included in the later scope. Keep photographs before and after installation. A quiet interior during the next dry period does not establish that the water path or concealed moisture was resolved.

  • Identify the affected assembly and transitions
  • Compare proposals against one documented boundary
  • Record concealed conditions before covering
